Production Code Administration Director Joseph Breen sends a memo to producer Walter Wanger requesting changes to the film Algiers, 1938. Among the alleged offenses were allusions to prostitution, promiscuity and suicide. The picture was a faithful remake of Pepe le Moko, a 1937 French release starring Jean Gabin about a French jewel thief in exile. To prepare for the new version, Wanger hired Charles Boyer and Hedy Lamarr and also tried—shockingly and unsuccessfully—to have all copies of Pepe le Moko destroyed. Though Algiers was only a modest success at the box office and with critics, its legacy is twofold. One is the oft-repeated and parodied line “Come with me to the Casbah,” spoken by Boyer in the trailer, but not in the film itself. The other is the Warner Bros. cartoon character Pepe le Pew, created by animator Chuck Jones and based on Boyer’s Pepe le Moko character.

Cybill Shepherd is born in Memphis, Tennessee, 1950. Her onscreen presence in early 1970s fare like The Last Picture Show (1971) and The Heartbreak Kid (1972) led director Martin Scorsese to search for “a Cybill Shepherd type” for the role of Betsy in his vigilante drama Taxi Driver (1976). “What's a Cybill Shepherd type anyway?” the actress said. “With my little pilot light of insecurity fanned by a few years' worth of scathing reviews, I thought, ‘Maybe I'm not even good enough to play my own type.’” Other names—few that could be considered Cybill Shepherd types—cropped up during the casting process. Per IMDB.com, Mary Steenburgen, Anjelica Huston and Goldie Hawn auditioned for the part. Liza Minnelli, Barbara Hershey, Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver turned down the role. Mia Farrow wanted it, but was rejected by Scorsese. Farrah Fawcett was mentioned. But in the end, Scorsese and producer Julia Phillips felt perhaps Shepherd might indeed qualify as a Cybill Shepherd type and cast the 25-year-old in the role of the campaign volunteer courted, disastrously, by obsessive, paranoid cabbie Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro).

Eli Black, the CEO of the United Fruit Company, smashes a window on the 44th floor of New York’s Pan Am Building and jumps to his death, 1975. His spectacular leap into mortality became inspiration for directors Joel and Ethan Coen, who used a similar suicide to set the plot in motion for The Hudsucker Proxy (1994), a period comedy about a goofy wet-behind-the-ears business grad (Tim Robbins) pegged to assume the role of President of Hudsucker Industries as part of an investment scam. In the film, the moment comes when Waring Hudsucker (Charles Durning) enlivens an otherwise dull board meeting by taking a running leap off a long conference table and smashing through an upper floor window of an office high rise. For the record, the suicide lasts 32 seconds from takeoff to landing.

Hedy Lamarr is fired from the film Picture Mommy Dead, 1966. The schlocky horror film starred Don Ameche, Martha Hyer (in a role originally slated for Gene Tierney), Wendell Corey and, as a replacement for Lamarr, Zsa Zsa Gabor. Reports had the actress departing the production for various reasons—a collapse brought on by nervous exhaustion, failure to show up on the first day of shooting, and her arrest at The May Company department store for attempting to shoplift an $86 pair of slippers.

She touched upon the subject briefly in her 1966 autobiography, Ecstasy and Me: “On a recent evening, sitting home alone suffering and brooding about my treatment at the police station because of an incident in a department store, and being replaced by Zsa Zsa Gabor in a motion picture (imagine how that pleased the ego!), I figured out that I had made—and spent—some thirty million dollars. Yet earlier that day I had been unable to pay for a sandwich at Schwab's drugstore.”

Her final film was the 1958 drama The Female Animal, costarring Jane Powell and Jan Sterling. In 1991, she was arrested once more for shoplifting, charged with stealing $21.48 worth of laxatives and eye drops from a Florida pharmacy. In 2000, Lamarr died of natural causes at age 85.
