Singer and actress Ethel Waters (above left, with Jeanne Crain in Pinky) dies of heart disease in Chatsworth, California, 1977. Her mother, Louise Anderson, gave birth to Ethel when Louise was just 12 years old, having been raped at knifepoint by a man named John Waters. Ethel was raised by maternal grandmother Sally Anderson, but assumed her father's surname. Highlights of her movie career include Cabin in the Sky (1943), The Member of the Wedding (1952) and Pinky (1949), for which she bacame the second African-American actress (after Hattie McDaniel in Gone With the Wind) to be nominated for an Oscar.
