Launched on August 13, 2011, Cinemagumbo is a site that addresses—randomly and often superficially—various topics centered around classic movies. A few present-day treasures and news about current film festivals may sneak into the mix from time to time, and we will certainly not be shy about our predictions come awards season. But silver screen gems from Hollywood’s Golden Age loom largest in our field of vision.
Basically, we are a small staff of film geeks who love to, in the words of E. B. White, smoke the opium pipe of a dark cinema. We make lists (10 Movies Featuring Rollerskates!), notice insignificant recurring bits (Montgomery Clifts’s tricks with a pool cue in A Place in the Sun and From Here to Eternity) and single out great movies and wonderful performances that others may have missed (Plunder Road, The Golden Gate Quartet in Star Spangled Rhythm). And, as best as we can, we accentuate the positive—no 10 Worst Child Performances of All Time on this site, as tempting as that may be.
Some of our choices will be obvious, others less so. But our opinions are our own, open to discussion, debate and disagreement. And we will always welcome lively discourse in our comments section.
Thanks for visiting, enjoy our shallow pontificating on all things cinematic…and please, let us hear from you.
